- Animated musical comedy Charming has found its princesses. Avril Lavigne, Ashley Tisdale, and Chinese pop singer Tang Tsz-Kei, who goes by the stage name G.E.M., are set to play Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, respectively. Demi Lovato stars as Lenore, in addition to managing the music score for the film, which sees the aftermath of the princesses realizing they’re all engaged to the same prince. Charming, written and produced by Ross Venokur, is currently in production at Cinesite’s new animation studio in Montreal. The casting of Prince Charming is underway as well. [Deadline]
- Laurence Fishburne is in negotiations for Passengers, a sci-fi love story starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt with Michael Sheen attached. The Imitation Game’s Morten Tyldum is directing the film from a script by Jon Spaihts. The story follows a passenger on a spacecraft taking thousands of people to another planet who wakes up early due to some kind of error, so he wakes another passenger to join him. [THR]
- Corey Hawkins—who plays Dr. Dre in the upcoming Straight Outta Compton, and can also be seen in season six of The Walking Dead—is in talks for Kong: Skull Island. The prequel stars Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, and is being directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Max Borenstein, John Gatins, and Dan Gilroy wrote the script. The film follows a group of explorers as they head into the island that is the ape’s home. [Variety]
- Kellan Lutz and Daniel MacPherson have boarded SFv1, along with Temuera Morrison, Bren Foster, Rachel Griffiths, and Teagan Croft. The sci-fi action flick follows a drifter living in the far future during a time of interplanetary colonization who helps a military contractor save his daughter. Shane Abbess is writing and directing the film; he and Brian Cachia co-created the work. Production is underway in Australia, and more cast members will reportedly be announced soon. [Deadline]
- Diary of a Teenage Girl’s Bel Powley has claimed the lead in Carrie Pilby. Based on Caren Lissner’s bildungsroman novel, the film follows 19-year-old genius, Carrie (Powley), who struggles to adjust after graduating from Harvard. Susan Johnson is directing the flick from a script by Kara Holden, and later drafts by Dean Craig. Eddie Izzard, Jason Ritter, and Tom Wilkinson also star. [THR]
