Casting Net: Christian Bale to star in Ferrari biopic for Michael Mann

  • Christian Bale is riding shotgun with director Michael Mann on Ferrari, Mann’s long-in-the-works movie about the Italian racer and auto mogul Enzo Ferrari. The biographical drama, which would recount the rise of a man whose name has become synonymous with sports cars, is expected to be shopped at the upcoming Venice and Toronto film festivals.   • Hugh Jackman is in early talks to play the legendary Greek hero Odysseus in a big-budget adaptation of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Announced by Lionsgate in April, the film will be directed by Francis Lawrence, who helmed the final three Hunger Games movies. [The Wrap]
  • Fantastic Four’s Doctor Doom, Toby Kebbell, has joined Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Corey Hawkins in Kong: Skull Island, the Universal and Legendary monster movie exploring the King Kong mythos. (Speaking of primates, Kebbell played one, via performance capture, in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.) Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly are also circling roles in Skull Island.   • Keith Stanfield, whose expert re-creation of Snoop Dogg’s flow in Straight Outta Compton had moviegoers doing double-takes, has come aboard War Machine, the Netflix political satire headlined by Brad Pitt and directed by David Michod (Animal Kingdom). Will Poulter (We’re the Millers) is also in talks to join the film, which is inspired by Michael Hastings’ nonfiction book The Operators, about Gen.
