Ice Cube to star in Humbug, a Christmas Carol update

Ready for Ebenezer Cube?

Universal Pictures has acquired Todd R. Jones and Earl Richey Jones’ Yuletide-themed spec script Humbug, with Ice Cube attached to star and Tim Story to direct, EW has confirmed.

Envisioned as a contemporary retelling of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol, Humbug would find Cube playing a Scrooge-like real-estate mogul who is shown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmases past, present, and future. Deadline first reported the news.

Humbug comes as the latest collaboration between Cube and Story, who made Barbershop, Ride Along, and the upcoming Ride Along 2 together.

Cube is also to produce Humbug alongside Jeff Kwatinetz (Black Knight, Big Momma’s House). The rapper-actor is currently riding high on the success of Universal’s N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, which has grossed $156 million at the domestic box office, on a $28 million budget.

The Jones brothers, whose other screenwriting credits include Rio and Johnson Family Vacation, will serve as co-producers on Humbug.
