Gyllenhaal, who dropped weight for last year’s Nightcrawler, clearly hit the gym to portray Billy “The Great” Hope, the troubled Junior Middleweight champion whose life is spiraling downward when a washed up former boxer (Forest Whitaker) takes him under his wing. The actor added 25 pounds of muscle during six months of training. ”I watched him vomit in the gym and almost pass out,” Fuqua recently told EW. ”I watched him take gut shots to the ribs, get dropped. You can’t ask for more than what he did. And it’s not because of some Hollywood reason. Jake gives you his heart.”

Southpaw, so named because of the boxer’s unorthodox left-handed stance, also stars Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris, and Victor Ortiz.
