When a young boy named Jake accidentally makes a new friend in an experiment gone wrong a troubled town is plunged into chaos. But with the creature rapidly evolving every day, Jake finds it increasingly difficult to keep his new pet secret. Jake’s friends and new girl Abbie realize they are not the only ones interested in this strange, mischievous little dinosaur and soon discover that the only thing more mysterious than what it is, is who is looking for it.
Goonies meets ET meets Clifford the Big Red Dog in this family friendly adventure about a kid, his friends, and his visually stunning dinosaur. My Pet Dinosaur is everything you could hope for in these classic stories. All with a modern visual twist.
Graphics: There’s a lot to love in My Pet Dinosaur, but the first thing you’ll notice are the graphics. While, I wouldn’t say they are top of the line, I would say that for the budget they far exceed expectations. Often times with independent movies a director is always looking for way to save a few dollars. Usually graphics are the best way to do that, but My Pet Dinosaur does exactly the opposite. Every frame with the Magnus is absolutely amazing. It was directed by Matt Drummond, a director with a very heavy background in visual effect and it definitely shows. The only problem it created is that it made me wonder how much better it could have been if only they had a higher budgets.
Family Fun Adventure: It is often difficult to find a movie that invokes the same emotions as classics like Goonies and ET, but My Pet Dinosaur excels in this area. And it’s so great to see. It’s nice to find a movie that would be entertaining for children while still enjoyable for adults.
Story: In My Pet Dinosaur we go on an adventure as Jake must protect his new friend from a foreboding military operation. During the course of the story we are introduced to a funny and heartwarming friendship between Jake and Magnus. One especially fun scene takes place at Jake’s house while Magnus is discovering new things. It’s as funny and cute as watching puppies run up and down stairs. While I would say there are some plot holes, the overall quality completely overshadows any pitfalls.
Character Driven: While the dinosaur and military force are the main drivers of the story, it doesn’t bypass character development. Jake, his brother, and his friends have personality, back story, and character growth. So it’s not just about a dinosaur running through a town, it’s about a family trying to make it through together.
Main Antagonist: I was pleasantly surprised by many of the actors and characters in My Pet Dinosaur. However, the characterization of Army Colonel Roderick was laughable and predictable. He was your typical mustache twirling villain that has no motivation other than to be evil. On top of that, the actor wasn’t even particularly convincing in the role. The actor seemed better fit as a nerd than a foreboding military leader. I feel that sounded meaner than I intended. Rowland Holmes did great as Colonel Roderick, I just feel the role and characterization didn’t quite fit him.
My Pet Dinosaur is a fun and endearing family adventure that invokes feels of nostalgia while giving a fun and unique story.
My Pet Dinosaur currently doesn’t have a US release plan, but keep an eye on it’s facebook for any updates
