Sorry, Princess Diaries fans. Despite reports to the contrary, a source close to Disney told EW that Princess Diaries 3 is not currently in development.
On Tuesday, the website Tracking Board reported that Princess Diaries 3 was happening, with original producer Debra Chase back in that capacity again for the project. The site noted it was unclear if star Anne Hathaway would return, and speculated that Princess Diaries 3 could actually be a reboot. EW’s source denied that notion; there is no sequel or reboot currently in the works.
To ease your pain, please accept this clip of Mia’s makeover from the original Princess Diaries:
Based on the Meg Cabot book series, the first installment of which was published in 2000, The Princess Diaries was a surprise hit for Disney in the summer of 2001. The film, directed by Garry Marshall, grossed $108 million in North America and turned Hathaway into a star. In the aftermath of the movie’s success—a sequel arrived in 2004—Hathaway made a concerted effort to shy away from the character who made her famous.
”Because I became so associated with The Princess Diaries, my main [criterion] is to look for the opposite of what I last did,” Hathaway said in a 2006 EW interview while promoting The Devil Wears Prada.
There could be more Princess Diaries in theaters at some point. Cabot has written a surfeit of books in the series, including the recently released Royal Wedding, “the very first adult installment.” The plot, courtesy of Cabot’s website:
For Princess Mia, the past five years since college graduation have been a whirlwind of activity, what with living in New York City, running her new teen community center, being madly in love, and attending royal engagements.
And speaking of engagements. Mia’s gorgeous longtime boyfriend Michael managed to clear both their schedules just long enough for an exotic (and very private) Caribbean island interlude where he popped the question! Of course Mia didn’t need to consult her diary to know that her answer was a royal oui.
Representatives for Chase were not immediately available for comment.
