Tom Hardy starrer Legend premiered last week at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it’s going to be a while until it hits theaters.
Universal Pictures announced Wednesday that the crime thriller will hit theaters on Friday, Nov. 20, seven weeks after its previously announced release date, Oct. 2.
Legend tells the true story of notorious British gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray, both portrayed by Hardy. The film, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, has gotten mixed reviews following its Toronto premiere, but Hardy’s dual performance has been widely praised.
The new release date pits Legend against likely box office powerhouse The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2, the final installment of the YA franchise, and Todd Haynes’ highly anticipated period romance Carol, which premiered at Cannes to early Oscar buzz.
The Oct. 2 spot Legend vacates would have seen it debut alongside Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film The Martian, starring Matt Damon, and just a few days after Philippe Petit biopic The Walk, both of which would have presented more direct competition for Legend’s audience.
After opening in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 20, the film will expand the following weekend and then go wide Dec. 11.
